Handmade linen pajama shorts
Boy did this project start off on the wrong foot.
Never start a sewing project when you're sick and distracted!
Remembering that I wanted to eliminate pockets from the shorts, I took the "front pattern piece", traced around it, extended the side seam, and cut it out. And then realised, I had used the incorrect pattern piece.
I had used the pocket piece!
But problem solving is a rite of passage with sewing. I decided to use the piece to cut out my front anyway, and deal with the lack of fabric at the hem by adding narrow cuffs, for length.
Cost breakdown
Cotton/linen blend in the shade "Carolina". I purchased 1m for $18.20 and used this to make a top, (not pajama related), and pajama shorts. So I can divide that in two, and it comes to $9.10. The spool of thread spanned the two projects, so I can divide the $5 in half, too.
Fabric: $9.10
Thread: $2.50
Elastic: $2
Total: $13.60
The results
I wanted two sets of summer pajamas to rotate, and having picked black to offset that terracotta pair of shorts I made in cotton, these blue linen ones look lovely with something light. I considered white, but it would be transparent which isn't great for being around other people; so I went with grey, because that's what I have on hand.
I don't have a lighter version of the kimono that pairs well with the other pajama set. Of course, I can still wear it with this set, but I do wonder if constructing something similar in a light colour could replace this one.
I don't need so much black for summer.
This is the phase I really enjoy - planning and researching and investigating!
For now, I am happy with my brand new, summer sleepwear.
Here are my handmade linen pajama shorts.
